One of the top 10 phobias, approximately 8 million people suffer from the fear of confined spaces known as claustrophobia. It can create feelings of pressure on your chest as well as make it difficult to breathe when you find yourself in a tight space like an elevator or a closet. If you are a patient who suffers from claustrophobia, undergoing a procedure in the enclosed tube of a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine may seem impossible, but we can help you overcome your fear to get the vital medical treatment that you need.
- 3T MRI: IMI is proud to offer Southwestern Idaho’s first 3T MRI unit at our Downtown Boise location. The 3T features a larger bore, which allows more room for the patient, and with increased signal strength can complete the scan twice as fast. For claustrophobic patients, this means that you have more interior space and will be able to have your exam completed much sooner than you thought.
- Sedation: For patients with higher levels of anxiety concerning the procedure, our staff of highly-trained registered nurses are able to administer sedation during your procedure so that you are able to safely relax while you are undergoing your exam.
MRI examinations are one of the best ways to examine and diagnose issues involving the brain and the musculoskeletal system, and that’s why we want to do all that we can to make your exam as pleasant as possible—especially if you are claustrophobic. MRI examinations are safely performed on approximately 10 million patients every year to aid in the diagnosis of injuries and conditions that might not be detectable by using other radiologic procedures.
“For someone who is as claustrophobic as I am, I could not have been treated any better and my concerns about being able to even do this MRI was greatly eased with the help of the nurse who helped me through it. A Big thank you to both the nurse, and the techs, that did the MRI.” – MRI Patient
