State-of-the-art, full-field digital Mammography is available to all of our patients at Intermountain Medical Imaging. Digital Mammography provides a higher quality of imaging, a lower dose of radiation for the patient, fewer repeat exams and computer images that can been enhanced and magnified with CAD (computer aided detection) to assist our radiologists in making an accurate diagnosis.
IMI provides both screening and diagnostic digital mammography.
Digital Screening Mammogram
The screening mammogram is an x-ray of the breast that uses the minimal amount of radiation needed to detect breast disease. It can safely detect breast cancer at its earliest and most treatable stages and does not significantly increase the risk of breast cancer.
Digital Diagnostic Mammogram
When a screening mammogram reveals a suspicious or unclear area of the breast, or a patient is having specific breast problems, a diagnostic mammogram is needed. This may consist of additional views beyond the standard four included in a screening mammogram. The additional views of diagnostic mammography are also commonly used for women who have breast implants because the implant interferes with imaging "through" the entire breast.
What to Expect During your Mammogram
During a mammogram, your breast will be compressed between two imaging plates for a few seconds while x-rays are taken. This is necessary for a quality mammogram and decreases the amount of exposure to radiation needed for proper imaging
Softer Mammogram
Intermountain Medical Imaging is pleased to be a certified Softer Mammogram Provider, a distinction awarded only to an elite group of healthcare facilities. For your personal use during every mammogram screening, IMI provides you with a single-use soft foam cushion called a MammoPad®.
- MammoPad® was designed for women by a female Stanford University breast surgeon
- Promotes an easier, warm and comfortable exam
- 70% of women in clinical studies reported the pad reduced discomfort by half
- FDA-cleared pads do not impair image quality
- Recyclable pads attach to the mammography compression plates
How to Prepare for Your Mammogram
- Prior to your exam, let us know if you have breast implants so that we can customize your exam
