DEXA (Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry)

dexa

Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) is the newest and most accurate means of determining the body composition. The information you can derive from this procedure is valuable in determining bone density, body fat percentage, lean body mass, fat mass, and the distribution of fat and lean tissue. The differences in fat and lean mass between the left and right side of the body can also be determined.

The DEXA machine uses low-dose X-rays to take pictures of your lower back and both hips while you lie comfortably on your back. It looks at the soft tissue as well as the bone. The soft tissue amount can be subtracted from the total, and what remains is a patient’s bone mineral density. If you have metal in your back or hips, your forearm may be scanned instead. This test takes approximately 20–25 minutes.

Who should have a DEXA exam?

  • Women over 50 years old
  • Postmenopausal women who have at least 1 additional risk factor (see list, right) or who have had a fracture
  • Anyone considering osteoporosis therapy
  • Women on prolonged hormone replacement therapy

What are the benefits of a DEXA scan?

Bone densitometry is a non-invasive, accurate and inexpensive way of detecting osteoporosis.
A bone densitometry scan:

  • Can be beneficial for any age or gender
  • Provides early detection that other tests miss
  • Can measure multiple areas of the body to determine the most appropriate treatments
  • Can estimate fracture risk
  • Is easily administered with a low radiation dose

Preparation for a DEXA scan

  • Do not take any calcium supplement for 24 hours prior to the scan
  • No IV contrast, barium studies or nuclear medicine studies for three weeks prior to the scan
