MAMMOGRAM SCREENING

The screening mammogram is an x-ray of the breast using the minimal amount of radiation needed to detect breast disease. It can safely detect breast cancer at its earliest and most treatable stages and does not significantly increase the risk of breast cancer.

What to expect during your mammogram
  • Your breast is compressed between two plates for a few seconds while x-rays are taken.
Ø This is necessary for a quality mammogram
Ø And decreases the amount of exposure to radiation needed for proper imaging

SOFTER MAMMOGRAM

Intermountain Medical Imaging is pleased to have become a certified Softer Mammogram Provider, a distinction awarded only to an elite group of healthcare facilities. For your personal use during every mammogram screening, IMI provides you with a single-use soft foam cushion called a MammoPad®.

  • MammoPad® was designed for women by a female Stanford University breast surgeon
  • Promotes an easier, warm and comfortable exam
  • 70% of women in clinical studies reported the pad reduced discomfort by half
  • FDA – cleared pads do not impair image quality
  • Recyclable pads attach to the mammography compression plates

MAMMOGRAM PREPERATION

  • Tell us if you have breast implants so that we can customize your exam
  • Wear a two piece outfit with a top that is easy to remove
  • For a clear image, do not use any powders, deodorants or creams on your underarm or breasts
  • Decrease compression discomfort
Ø Schedule your exam a few days after your menstrual period
Ø If you are on hormone therapy, schedule before you start your monthly cycle of medication

ADDITIONAL TESTS

Mammogram results are sometimes unclear or show reason for concern. Other tests, such as an ultrasound, breast MRI or focused mammogram may be recommended. To evaluate abnormalities, a biopsy may be needed. Analysis of any abnormality is a vital process in ensuring that appropriate care is given.
