DEXA (dual energy x-ray absortiometry)

The DEXA machine uses low-dose x-rays to take pictures of your low back and both hips while you lie comfortably on your back.  It looks at the soft tissue as well as the bone.  The soft tissue amount can be subtracted from the total, and what remains is a patient's bone mineral density.  If you have metal in your back or hips, your forearm may be scanned instead.  this test takes approximately 20 - 25 minutes.

The Achilles Plus uses ultrasound to scan through the heel.  The heel is measured because it's bone is similar to that found in the spine and hip where osteoporotic fractures occur most.  Ultrasound does not travel well through air.  Therefore, during the test, the hell is placed in a warm water bath to provide a path for the energy to follow.  This test takes about 5 - 10 minutes.
